from "Sleeping Through Texas" by Jackson Wheeler

"...All this is a dream too.  It will be years before she is

a widow.  One of her babies will die, but not when she expects it.

This war will end only to be replaced by another.  And her life

will be what she makes of it, stitched together like a quilt with

an intricate pattern which covers her.  A life that she could

never have imagined - not even in her wildest dreams."

Bare Root Seasons by Glenna Luschei

I hit rock bottom.

My shovel strikes boulder

in the creek.

Beneath white sycamores

I reason

if I find no soil

if my shoulders hurt

then my heart must wait.

Plant now

or forever miss the fruit.

Roots can worm their way

through earth.

Darling,

it’s the bare root season.

GLENNA LUSCHEI  FEATURED AT CAL POLY WINTER CELEBRATION READING

FRIDAY, JAN 23, 2009

Cal Poly’s English department announces its first Winter Celebration Reading, which will take place on Friday January 23rd, at 7PM in the Ag Engineering Bld in room 123.

Glenna Luschei, the editor of nationally famous Solo Café magazine, will be the featured reader, preceded by five of The Plein Air Poets of San Luis Obispo and selected local poets from the current issue of Solo Café.

Founder and publisher of the poetry journals Café Solo, Solo and Solo Café, Luschei is the author of many chapbooks, special editions and trade books, the latest being Seedpods and Total Immersion published by Presa Press in 2006 and 2008 and Libido Dreams released by Artamo Press in 2007.

Luschei was named Poet Laureate of San Luis Obispo City and County for the year 2000. She has also published an artist book of her translation of Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz’s Enigmas.

Seven environmentally committed local writers make up The Plein Air poets.  In their book, the poets list themselves as a "painter, biologist, jazz musician, urban planner, university professor, community activist, English teacher, educational psychologist, writer and midwife.”

Five of the Plein Air poets will be reading. One reader, Jane Elsdon of Atascadero, was Poet Laureate of San Luis Obispo in 2005.

The reading is hosted by Cal Poly professor and poet Kevin Clark.

Two volumes will be for sale at the reading: POEMS FOR ENDANGERED PLACES by the Plein Air Poets and SOLO CAFÉ 4 & 5.

Admission is free.
